Since its inception in 1929, the Atlanta Ballet has grown to become one of the most respected dance companies in the country. They’ve performed at multiple venues, and offer a wide range of performances to viewers. This ballet company seeks to provide the people in Atlanta with an incredible theater-going experience.
The two venues the ballet typically performs at are the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and the Fox Theatre, both located in Atlanta. They also perform at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center on occasion. These venues offer very different experiences to visitors. While the Cobb was built fairly recently, the Fox has a long history, and is considered to be one of Atlanta’s historical landmarks.
The company regularly performs classic ballets, such as The Nutcracker. However, they also put perform ballets that are different or unusual in some way. For example, the adult ballet company has been involved in a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.
In addition, the ballet relies on the talents of local composers and choreographers. In 2015, they will be premiering a new ballet called Camino Real, which is based on the book of the same name by Tennesse Williams. It will feature choreography by Helen Pickett and music by Peter Salem.
Other performances from the ballet are decidedly family friendly. Their upcoming production of Snow White is aimed specifically at children 12 and under, and is under one hour in length. In doing these performances, they hope to instill a love of dance in the children in the Atlanta community.
In addition to their wide range of performances, the ballet seeks to nurture the talent of young dancers. They opened a Centre for Dance Education in 1996, and have provided a number of young members of the Atlanta community with formal dance training. They have also provided dance lessons to adults.
The education center also offers a “Kids In Step program” designed specifically for children in the community. It allows children to get a look at a number of the ballet’s performances, and provides them with a glimpse behind the scenes as well. Because of this program, the ballet is frequently visited by Atlanta-area schoolchildren.
Both the dance company and its education centre have won a number of awards. Their company, which consists of 25 dancers, have received international respect. People from all over the world have praised the company for both their performances and their educational outreach.
While the Atlanta ballet regularly performs full-length ballets, they also perform what they call “mixed repertory program.” These programs showcase a number of different dance performances. They are often recommended to those who are new to the ballet, and would like to get an idea of what the company is about.
Atlanta is rightfully proud of their incredibly dance company. The ballet has worked hard to be an asset to the community, and will continue in their outreach initiatives in the future. They have a long history, and will continue to perform for many years to come.
